The multi-stage fitness test, more commonly known as the bleep test is used by sports coaches and trainers to estimate an athlete's VO2 max (maximum oxygen uptake). It is also used by police and the armed forces to evaluate a recruits fitness level.

The test is especially useful for players of sports like football, hockey, rugby, cricket, netball or tennis and is employed by many international sporting teams as an accurate test of Cardiovascular fitness.

It was created by Luc LEGER in 1982 and later published in 1988 in its present form with 1 min stages under the name "Multistage 20-m shuttle run test for aerobic fitness".

Requirements :
  • A flat, non slippery surface at least 20 metres in length
  • 30 metre tape measure
  • Marking cones or chalk to mark the turning points
  • Tape recorder, CD Player, mp3 player or ipod
  • Pen and paper to record your progress
  • Advisable to have another person with you (in case of injury and for encouragement)
